England along with Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
